Owl in a Tree Hole Tile

$118.00
sold out

Tile Size: 3 3/4” x 3 3/4”

Includes a custom, handcrafted wood frame.

This ceramic tile is created using the sgraffito technique, where the tile is glazed and a tool is used to scratch through the surface to reveal the lower layer of light colored clay.

“I am drawn to clay because it can take on so many different characters, from delicate to massive, smooth to highly textured, able to capture great detail or just be abstract or mysterious. The tiles that I make have an organic feel, inspired by textures and patterns found in nature, to give the viewer a glimpse of another creature’s world.

”My sgraffito tiles are hand built rather than being pressed or made in a mold. The tiles are rolled and cut from a slab of clay. After drying, they are individually painted with underglazes, carved to create the images on the tile, glazed and fired in a kiln.”

Handmade by local artist Diane Brown-Rytlewski.
